SHORT SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC LIFE
Mariella Belén Galeano López is an environmental engineer who graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción in San Lorenzo, Paraguay. She also holds a Master's in Environmental Technology from the Escola de Engenharia Industrial e Metalurgica of the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During her Master's program, she studied the effect of the anode potential on primary biofilm formation by Shewanella amazonensis sp., an exoelectrogenic bacterium, on a carbon-based electrode. Her research was funded by the Organization of American States-OAS (Washington, USA) and GCUB (Brasilia, Brazil), and she used biodiesel wastewater as a substrate.
Mariella is now pursuing her Ph.D. as a Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering student at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. Her research uses innovative materials to enhance bioelectrochemical ammonia recovery from highly-loaded wastewater.
Mariella Belén's research interests are:
- Bioelectrochemical systems for nitrogen removal/recovery from industrial wastewater,
- High-performance Gas Diffusion Electrodes (GDE) and,
- High-performance Cation exchange membrane (CEM).
