SHORT SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC LIFE

Liwen Yan(China, 1996) is degreed in Water Science and engineering (Yantai University,2020) and MSc in Water technology offered jointly by Wageningen University, University of Twente and University of Groningen(Netherlands, 2022). She was interested in phosphorus recovery from animal manure during anaerobic digestion in her thesis at Wetsus. The recovered phosphorus can be reused as fertilizer to save on mineral fertilizer. She is currently a PhD student in Environmental Science and Technology and her research aims to foster phosphorus recovery in urban wastewater treatment by combining side-stream reactors and precipitation.

Liwen’s current research interests are:

  • Achieve a comprehensive understanding of the behaviour and dynamics of microbial populations involved in novel S2EBPR systems.
  • Characterisation of PHA and EPS production of bioP sludge under the S2EBPR configuration.
  • Quantify and understand the existing differences between the anaerobic and the SSSF reactor.
  • Optimization of the S2EBPR conditions in view of maximising resource recovery.
