SHORT SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC LIFE
Xènia Juan Díaz (Barcelona, 1992) holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2014) and MSc in Oceanography and Marine Management specialized in biogeochemistry (Universitat de Barcelona, 2015). During her MSc studies, she did an internship in the Labaqua company assessing and modelling the impact of wastewater discharges offshore Barcelona, collaborating with the Marine Engineering Department of the Polytechnic University of Catalunya. After her master studies, she went abroad for an internship in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Massachusetts, USA). Her work consisted of assessing the impact of different radioactive isotopes (Sr-90 and Cs-137) on the ocean derived from Fukushima nuclear power plant discharges. After coming back home, she got involved in the Environmental Science and Technology PhD program of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Her aim is now to study the feasibility of implementing the autotrophic nitrogen removal process in urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
Xènia’s current research interests are:
• Implementation of the PN/A technology in a two-stage process at mainstream conditions.
• Developing an efficient start-up procedure for the development of a partial nitritation granular biomass.
• Study the anammox process at mainstream conditions by simulating real WWTPs conditions in terms of temperature decrease.
