SHORT SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC LIFE
Marcel Vilaplana Artigas (Barcelona, 1981) is a chemical engineer (UAB, 2004) and PhD in Environmental Technology (UAB, 2011) with the thesis entitled “Biodegradation of halogenated organic compounds with Trametes versicolor” awarded with Cum Laude. The topic of his research was the study of the degradation pathways on different xenobiotic components by the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor and the subsequent scale-up of these processes. He was visiting during three months the Zentrum für Umweltforschung Helmholtz in Leipzig (Germany) to work on the application of compound stable isotopic analyses to determine the degradation of organic fuel additives by T. versicolor in liquid media. After finishing his PhD thesis, he worked for an additional year as postdoctoral researcher on the same topic. On 2012, he started working for the start-up company Ioniqa Technologies, located in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), as a R&D engineer on the field of Magnetic Smart Materials. The main focus of his work was the scale-up of different processes using these materials, such as chemical recycling of PET using a recoverable magnetic catalyst. On 2015 he moved to the company FujiFilm, located in Tilburg (the Netherlands), to work also as R&D engineer on the development of new products on the field of photographic paper. In 2020, he started working at GENOCOV (UAB) as a postdoctoral researcher.
Marcel’s current research interests are:
• Scale-up of novel configurations for energy and resource recovery from real wastewater.
• Scaling-up of bioelectrochemical systems to bridge the gap between lab and pilot scale
• Bioelectrochemical production of hydrogen from wastewater on a pilot scale
