Two posters presented in the 13th IWA Leading Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies (2016)

Juan Antonio Baeza participated in the LET conference presenting two posters. The first one was titled “Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal at low Sludge Retention Time for increased energy recovery” by Carlos Chan, Albert Guisasola and Juan Antonio Baeza. Two stage A/B WWTP is being studied as a possible treatment able to treat wastewater with low energy consumption or even with a net energy generation. A-stage is designed to remove organic matter by adsorption and degradation at very short retention time, while the B-stage is based on autotropic nitrogen removal with partial nitritation combined with Anammox activity. However, biological P-removal implementation in the A/B process is not a current focus of research, as it usually only relies on precipitation in the A-stage. In this work, we study the possible compatibility of Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) with organic matter removal in an A-stage configuration. The stability of an SBR-EBPR system was evaluated at sludge retention time (SRT) lower than the usual operation.

The second poster was “Bottlenecks To Bioelectrochemical Hydrogen Production At Pilot Scale” by S. Cotterill, J. Baeza, E. Heidrich, T. Curtis, A. Guisasola. It was prepared in collaboration with the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Newcastle University, UK. The topic was identifying the real bottlenecks for scaling-up hydrogen production with Microbial Electrolysis Cells reviewing previous experiences available in the literature and comparing to our experimental set-ups. Highlighting failures so far provides opportunities for future work, and the key to solving these challenges is to garner realistic long-term experience at pilot-scale in tandem with fundamental research.
