SMART-Plant activities at the IWA – World Water Congress 2018, 16-21, Tokyo, Japan

The World Water Congress 2018 is the most important congress organized by the IWA.This 11th edition drew 9815 participants from 98 countries. The Congress programme included a total of 49 workshops, 88 technical sessions with 352 papers presented, 633 posters, 27 poster sessions with 462 presentations, 6 leadership forums, 7 plenaries, 3 master lectures, and 19 training and skills development sessions.

The SMART-Plant project (, in which @Genocov participates, has had several activities at this conference.

Monday 17

SMART-Plant participated in the workshop Process synthesis, design and control of next generation resource recovery & wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), chaired by Gürkan Sin (Technical University of Denmark) with two presentations. Dr. Francesco Fatone presented Integrating recovery of valuable resources and products in existing wastewater treatment plants: from concept to standard practice?, andDr. Baeza presented Decision Support System for selecting the best configuration including ‘Smartechs’ of the SMART-Plant project.

Dr. Francesco Fatone also participated as speaker in the workshops Nature-based solutions: Engineering approaches to integrating green and grey infrastructure from catchment to consumer and in Towards a next generation of water systems and services for the circular economy.


Tuesday 18

SMART-Plant also participated with two presentations in the session Resource recovery II: organic compounds, chaired by Dr. Takao Murakami (Nihon Suido Consultants) and Yongmei Li (Tongji University). Dr. Baeza presented Mainstream SCEPPHAR Configuration for Integrating P and PHA Recovery in the Water Line of WWTPs and Dr. Nicola Frison presented Start-up of the First Pilot Plant for Short-Cut Enhanced Phosphorus and PHA Recovery from Real Sieved Wastewater.

Finally, Dr. Maite Pijuan, collaborator of SMART-Plant project on GHG emission monitoring, presented in the Activated sludge processes session her work Direct GHG Emissions from a Full-scale Plug-flow Reactor: Identifying Temporal and Spatial Variations.
