Research stay – Natalia starts her research stay at FCT, Lisboa

Natalia Rey is a PhD student in our group GENOCOV. Her research is focused on the development of microbial community enriched in putative PAOs other than Ca. Accumulibacter (Thiothrix and Comamonadaceae) in an A2/O pilot plant and using glutamate as carbon and nitrogen source. She will also study the effect of different carbon sources and different electron acceptors in EBPR activity with this microbial community. Moreover, she will develop an aerobic system for carbon removal at low SRT and energy production.

Natalia will be performing a PhD research stay during 3 months in the Facultade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Lisboa). She will work under the supervision of Dr. Adrian Oehmen and Dr. Ricardo Marques.

The research stay at FCT will be focused on the evaluation of the performance of phosphorus removal for different cultures (enriched Tetrasphaera culture, enriched Accumulibacter culture and two full-scale sludge, one with EBPR and the other with N removal only) with different carbon sources (amino acids). Moreover the quantification of the extracellular and intracellular amino acids and internal metabolites will be measured in order to close as much as possible the carbon mass balance.
