Many scientists from Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), Universidad de Cádiz (UCA) and Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC) have participated in the II MICROBIOFIN Meeting to discuss about the results obtained within the 3-years project "Monitorización, modelización y contro para la optimización de biofiltros percoladores de desulfuración anóxicos y aerobios", which has been funded by the spanish government within a research national program (Plan Nacional de Investigación 2008-2012) and has its end the 31st of December 2015. The meeting took place in the school of engineering of UASB last week (9th and 10th of December 2015). MICROBIOFIN has been coordinated by David Gabriel from GENOCOV (UAB) being Domingo Cantero and Xavier Gamisans the main researchers in UCA and UPC, respectively.
The project is related with the reuse of the energy contained in the biogas as an alternative to the use of fossil fuels. For this reason is necessary to use the best technologies available to prepare the biogas for its use. The project has allowed developing two technologies based on bioreactors to remove the hydrogen sulfide from the biogas. Moreover, this has allowed developing tools and additional knowledge related with the microbial diversity and activity analysis in the bioreactors; the development and utilization of microsensors to improve the biofilm knowledge; the development of hydrodynamic and kinetic models to describe the physical-chemical and biological processes; and the development of control strategies to be implemented in the bioprocesses.
The objective of the meeting was to know the results obtained during the 3-years project from each research group, especially those obtained during this last year of the project. This meeting has also served to discuss about future research collaborations between the groups involved in the project. Researchers from the three universities have been working together from 2009 in two different national projects which has allowed for presenting many PhD Thesis, research stays of the PhD students in the other groups involved in the project besides publishing many scientific papers. Finally, the groups have successfully responded to different companies requests came up along the project progress.
