Enric Blázquez is a PhD student in our group GENOCOV. He will be performing a PhD research stay during 6 months in the Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) of the University of Queensland (Australia). Enric will work under the supervision of Dr. Stefano Freguia and Dr. Pablo Ledezma.
Enric’s research is focused on the implementation of bioelectrochemical systems for elemental sulfur recovery from high-strength sulfate industrial wastewaters which usually lack of electron donor source. The process lays on the simultaneous occurrence in a biocathode of: i) autotrophic sulfate reduction to sulfide by sulfate reducing bacteria and ii) partial oxidation of sulfide to elemental sulfur by sulfide oxidizing bacteria.
The research stay at AWMC will be focused on the implementation of this system for the treatment of acid mine drainage which is a wastewater with a high sulfate content and a high heavy metal concentration. Moreover, several materials and configurations will be tested in order to improve the elemental sulfur production and its recovery from the treated water.
