Their work will be focused on evaluating the feasibility of innovative processes such integrating the biological autotrophic sulphur and nitrogen removal for the treatment of industrial wastewater. The completely autotrophic sulphur and nitrogen removal process is intended to operate two separate stages: in the first one the Sulphide Oxidizing Organisms (SOO) reduce the nitrates to nitrites (Denitratation). The nitrites can then undergo a treatment in a separate second stage with anammox process, the ultimate aim is to couple sulphur and nitrogen removal in a completely autotrophic process.
Andrea and Serena will stay for six months at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in the GENOCOV research group in view of optimizing sulphide-driven denitritation. Andrea will start and optimize the running of a lab-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor (UASB) containing SOO granular biomass; meanwhile Serena will investigate the bacterial kinetic of SOO from a separate lab-scale Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR).
Andrea and Serena will coaduvate PhD student Cecilia Polizzi, in her research on integrating nitrogen and sulphur cycles through anaerobic autotrophic processes.
