Mariella Galeano


Mariella Belén Galeano López is an Environmental Engineer from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (San Lorenzo, Paraguay).
She holds an MSc in Environmental Technology from the Escola de Engenharia Industrial e Metalurgica of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), with the sponsorship of the Organization of American States-OAS (Washington, US) and GCUB (Brasilia, Brazil). During her Master's degree, she studied the effect of the anode potential on the primary biofilm formation by Shewanella amazonensis, a less studied exoelectrogenic bacterium, using biodiesel wastewater as substrate.
Currently, she is a PhD student in Environmental Science and Technology in the Chemical Engineering Department at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona). Her research aims to optimise bioelectrochemical reactors for ammonia recovery (from highly loaded wastewaters) using a novel selective ionic exchange membrane.  

Mariella’s current research interests are:
-Bioelectrochemical systems for nitrogen removal/recovery from industrial wastewater
-High-Performance Gas Diffusion Electrodes (GDE)
